Description
Koalas feed mainly on eucalypt leaves and have a specialized digestive system which means that Habitat loss easily and radically affects their population. They are solitary, spending most of their time in trees, breeding in summer and usually producing one joey per year.
Conservation status:
Koalas in New South Wales, Queensland, and the ACT are listed as Endangered under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Habitat:
Koalas inhabit open forests and woodlands, with their range defined by the presence of specific food trees. They are found in higher densities near fertile soils and watercourses where these trees thrive.
